The Human Eye and the Macula
Vision is of course the keenest of our senses. A world of darkness robs one of the great joys of seeing the beauty of our world. We are blessed as a species in that if we are born with vision we usually retain it throughout our life. There is however an insidious disease that is afflicting millions of people around the world during the aging process. This disease is by far the leading cause of legal blindness in older human beings. It is called age related macular degeneration or AMD. Thankfully there is a proven method to try to slow the progression of this disorder that was discovered with the AREDS studies. The disease involves the formation of a covering over the sensitive macula called a drusen deposit.
